Default What exactly is involved during an "engine rebuild?"

Specifically an early 90s VW 2-liter 16V. Mileage over 120K. Usual cost? Or on the turbo front, an early 90s 2-liter Mitsubishi turbo in the Galant and DSM cars?

Default secrets that no one knows ooooooooo (supposed to be spooky)

why not get a new motor? engine rebuilds cost alot and with an old engine w/ high miles youre better off with just buying another

Default Depends....

do you want to do the minimum to get it running, or do you want to go all out, or somewhere in between?

What's your budget?

Default Probably somewhere in between.

I'll be looking to buy used, and most of these decade old cars have over 100K on them. If the car has a bunch of mods (suspension, brakes, bars etc) and is in good shape, I'd like it to last for another 50K miles, with track days included. I don't want to go nuts with it, but may look into adding a turbo or something down the road. I don't like the VR6 into the A2 chassis idea because of weight issues, even though there are a bunch of them out there. Is there anywhere that sells these engines new?

I can imagine that a high mileage turbo motor will have more issues than a NA motor will. Thinking about a 91/92 Galant VR4 too.

Default It really depends on how the engine was used...

A little stoplight racing won't put as much abuse on an engine compared to hitting the 1/4 mile every weekend or running Auto-X/Track Days.

I would think that as long as the compression is good and it doesn't burn/leak any oil, it will probably be OK. A leakdown test could also be done.

Default It depends...

Higher compression usually leads to higher cylinder pressure. Sometimes the factory manual will say.

I'd say between 130-200psi, as long as all cylinders are within 10% of each other.

Default 150-175 from what I've read.

I think.
