Modern tribological research has shown the adverse effects of gasoline direct injection (FSI, there are many different names for the same thing, TFSI just means turbocharged direct injection). 10K mile change intervals is way too long for certain but we understand why Audi and other OEMs specify this. For anyone that changes their own oil just look at how dark it comes out, it is black as night. That is soot and if it agglomerates you are in big trouble.

Burning some oil is nothing to worry about. The key is the rate of change. Burning a quart every tank of gas like post #17 above, yes that is too much. There are several factors going on here that are self-fulfilling. At the point where your engine is burning that much oil the rings are not working and are not able to bend and move the way they need to in order to form good ring seal. This will fuel dilute the oil which will exacerbate and accelerate the problem, etc, etc. Use a high quality oil and change it often. Oil is cheap compared to new engines or engine work.
