Default DMV Fees

For some reason my renewal has gone down. $395 in 2018 down to $369.
Didn't think this was possible.
Maybe it's because I need to SMOG this year...

If CA is like AZ the registration/license fees are based on the value of the car and slowly go down each year.

So Cali effectively has an annual personal property tax on cars?

Instead of just a $40-ish registration free?

Wow.

Same here in CO, but it drops to just $3 after 10 years. If you ask me it just keeps older cars on the roads longer....
I saw a Mclaren the other day and pondered over the multi-thousand dollar registration fee....heck an $80k 2018 S6 is $1000 to register.

In AZ my wife's 2018 Range Rover Sport first year license fee was $1,088. The fee for 2019 will likely be around $1,000. Explains why so many snow birds register their AZ cars in their home state. A slight off-set is that on private party used car sales there is no state sales tax. (but there is sales tax on used cars purchased from a dealer)

Yikes and I thought the $150/yr fee for Texas was high. That’s with a custom colored plate, otherwise it would be $100:yr. I did pay 6.25% sales tax though. But woohoo Texas!

Yes, it's been like that forever in Calif. That portion of the fee is deductible on federal income tax. NV does the same.
