Default drive to empty indicator

How accurate is your indicator of miles left to drive til the tank ie empty (DTE)? Mine on 2.0T seems pretty horrible and unreliable. When I fill up, it says I have 480 miles to go while I end up driving 320. Starting at about half point and towards the end of the tank it just drops at a rapid rate, about 10 miles for every mile driven. It is the worst indicator I have seen in any vehicle I owned.

Those indicators are useless "toys". You cannot rely on them to make any meaningful decisions.

Witam

It gives you the best case scenario and it's useless. Every car I had with this was the same way.

So it is not anything that can be corrected by reprogramming. Everyone seems to be in the same boat. I feel a bit better now,.. not really. Would be nice to get the 480 indicated miles out of the tank instead of 320.

I dont think this can be reprogrammed. Computer is making a lot of assumptions how the car is going to be driven. I've noticed that this reading will adjust itself on a long highway drives based on the actual MPG average.*.

I've never seen it remotely close (readout at fill up compared to actual mileage when close to empty). Even though fill ups are shy a couple gallons of the stated tank capacity, that still doesn't make up the difference. I really only use it close to empty, as in can I get home and gas up tomorrow instead.

I believe it can be corrected, if one corrects the MPG calculator via the following VagCom coding.

Correct Consumption in DIS program
[17 - Instruments] [Adaptation - 10] -> Channel 3 change 100 to xxx (see samples below)

Sample 1 - Calculation based on volume per distance (e.g. l/100km):
DIS: 9.3 l/100 km.
Real: 9.8 l/100 km. (100 * 9.8 / 9.3 = 105.38)
Channel 3 will be changed from 100 to 105
Sample 2 - Calculation based on distance per volume (e.g. MPG):
DIS: 23 MPG.
Real: 24 MPG. (100 * 23 / 24 = 95.83)
Channel 3 will be changed from 100 to 96

I do not think this is the primary use for this VAG COM mode. To my understanding this is way to adjust how mpg (or l/100km) fuel consumption is calculated, not to correct remainig range. Obviously it will affect expected range as if you increase the consumtion readout range will be smaller on remaining fuel.... but will be equally affected at full tank and when aproaching empty!
But the question is; is your actual (or average) consumption accurate? E.g. if you compare DIS readout with your own calculation is it reasonably close? If so, you should not change this. Fuel consumption is calculated from fuel flow and distance travelled readout and this is what you can adjust by this mod.
Problem with our cars (and inacuracy of range calculation) is, I think, different; for some reason reading of remainig fuel is not linear. Just example of what it might look like (real fuel remaining - sensor readout):
100 - 100
90 - 95
80 - 84
70 - 73
60 - 63
50 - 52
40 - 42
30 - 31
20 - 21
10 - 10
This is why it is so optimistic at the beginning (as it thinks there is more fuel remaining than it is in reality) and gets so bad at the end (becaus it seems it is consuming more fuel than in reality). If this is the case, none proportional reprograming will correct it.

With VAG-COM is possible to make corrections consumption and calibration of sensors in the tank
