The only real advantage of the S-tronic is that it's less prone to overheating on the track, because there is no torque converter. But who in their right mind would use the Q5 as a track car?

I respectfully beg to differ...the S-tronic IS in Audi's higher end "S" cars such as the S4, S5, RS5, S6 and S7 and the flagship S8 is the ultimate luxury that has the trip 8sp, as most of those who buy these S8 are looking for comfort and luxury.
I'm not tracking my S5, but love the s-tronic's smoothness. And will not buy another Audi without it.
As for the Q5, if and when they bring a SQ5 to the States, it'll have the s-tronic in it and not the 8sp tip in the 3.0.

Don't forget that the new RS6 and the upcoming RS7 have 8-speed Tiptronic. Audi seems to be moving away from the S-tronic in general. In Europe, where the Q5 used to come with S-tronic, they switched to Tipronic for the 2013 model year.

This is true...However, keep in mind that the RS6, RS7 and S8 will have the monster 4 liter. The dual clutch s-tronic is not compatible with the massive, near 500 ft.lb torque it puts out. There, a torque conv. is the only way to go.
