OT: Volkswagen says driverless vehicles are at least five years away
OT but might of interest
Fully autonomous vehicles will take at least another five years to perfect, with the cost and complexity of rolling out the technology globally serving to undermine the business case, Volkswagen’s head of commercial vehicles said.

Ask anyone over 65 how much their auto insurance is.
Elderly drivers are as high a risk group as beginning drivers. And, because they have no other way to get around or they're used to decades of driving, they often KNOW that they should stop driving--but don't. Autonomous cars, even with errors, will outperform these drivers (and many others) and that alone provides a huge market incentive.
Then there's the more average middle-age driver, who will be very happy that their car can take them home after a night out drinking or a holiday party, when they'd otherwise risk a DUI.
Even with flaws, autonomous cars can improve driving for everyone. Even if all they do is KEEP RIGHT so the left lane is open for the folks moving a bit more vigorously.(G)
Considering the size of the computing tasks alone...I'm just not sure five years is going to be anything but horribly overoptimistic.
I think VW signed a joint technology sharing agreement with Ford just last week, for autonomous cars.
