To those who said it is not intended to work that way, not so...it is. However it does seem that most people do like to see the arrow always pointing up so as not to confuse right and left turns. For me...I lilke North orientation of the map just like I would hold the old fashioned paper kind!

I am the original poster. On a recent trip, the system started to work correctly. With orientatio set to North, my arrow (current position) now points in the direction of travel. The only change I made was to manually select north as opposed to selecting North with the voice command. Not sure why that would be different, but it is working as expected now.
