If anybody is having issues removing the rear footwell light assembly, it's actually super simple. I broke one light before figuring this out:

Move seat all the way forward and raise it all the way up.

Now you can stick your head beneath the seat and find the big circular hole right next to the footwell light. It helps to have your cellphone flashlight handy to see better.
Put two fingers through the hole and place them on top of the light assembly -- now push down to pop it out. You may or may not need to loosen the light first to pop it out. Use a metal flathead screwdriver, not a nylon trim tool for these rear lights. Once popped out, use the flathead to disconnect the light by pressing in on the retaining tab.

Hope this helps someone!

To the OP, do you find the footwell lights too bright? I bought the full LED kit and have swapped out everything except for the footwells as I'm concerned they will be too bright when driving at night.

If you cant control through mmi screen the ambient light then get original leds. They come with a diode or is it called resistor ?? (Note again they are original leds, havent tested if chinese/non OEM ones can be controlled or not). You can control the light intensity through the mmi screen.

Did you enable the ambient footwell light coding??

If you can control OEM with MMI our LEDs will also be dimmable no issues.

Or you can go with our color changer model that has a built in dimmer in the remote.

Check them all out here:

Footwell's are only on when you open the doors, at least mine are not on while I drive.

Coding available on my airbag on off switch retrofit thread (since I am retrofitting both at same time). Have some info there regarding footwell light retrofit. Should always be on if done properly. Isnt this the purpose of the ambient led light control in mmi??

Don't have ambient led light control in mmi. Footwells are not considered ambient light.

This is from the Q5 footwell led light retrofit guide: (which I have obviously, as I said I am not following others work but doing it differently).
’09 – Central Elec.’
Coding
Long Code Helper
Byte 16
Activate Bit 6: ‘Interior/Ambience lighting adaption active’ first, by clicking on the tick box.
Then, activate Bit 0 ‘Footwell lights front installed’

Come out of the ‘Long Code Helper’ by clicking on ‘Exit’ and then ‘Do it!’
To enable the Screen Menu on RADIO CONCERT
[56 - Radio]
[Coding - 07] -> Long Coding Helper -> Byte 8 Bit 7 - Interior Light Settings active - (1 = active)

If you dont have radio concert you need to check how this is done with your mmi.

Footwell lights should be on and you should be able to adjust the light level in your MMI.
