Default Rusted Brake Calipers

My brake calipers have developed a significant amount of rust on them. Is this normal? Dealer claimed so on my last visit at 35k. I'm going to bitch again this Friday when I bring it in for the 45k service, and last before base warranty expires. My 9 year-old Acura TL's calipers has trace amounts of rust, but unnoticeable from 5 feet out. The Audi's are just hideous! If they refuse to do anything about them, I'll need to consider painting them or covering them up.

Paint them, or upgrade. That is pretty bad, IMO.

That is crazy amount of rust for a caliper. I lived for many years in an area that used a ton of salt all winter long and I have never seen calipers with rust like that. I haven't been to SF isince January but I don't think your winter was that bad!

No salt here, just fog and ocean air. I've tried to find another Audi on the streets with rust like this and nothing comes close and most have none at all.

It must be the salt/moist air.

What are you using to wash your rims?

Both my vehicles are garaged at home and at work. And I take both to a high-end all-hand car wash at least once a month. They do a lot of exotics. Could their wheel cleaner be the culprit? I'd hate to think that since they work on lots of expensive cars. But then again, I have lots of swirl marks too and use them exclusively. I'll need to investigate further.

Could very well be acid-based wheel cleaners being left sitting too long and eating into the paint/protective coating... in turn allow rusting to happen sooner.

I tend to agree that it's likely the wheel cleaning regimen. If you look at all the variables, i.e., the calipers all come from the same parts bin, yours are the exception even in the same climate/local, those same "professional" guys add swirl marks to your car.- then it tends to point to the wheel cleaning.

I'd look for a different detailer that's for sure. Then I'd buy some high quality silver caliper paint, pull the wheels and go to it. That way, you'll not only fix a bad situation, you'll end up making it better..
