Good video.Thanks.Guess I'll be shopping the Uniden.Good to see a blast from the past take on the big boys with the serious marketing budgets. Not that they're actually an underdog, major Japanese company, that's fine.

Usually getting shot with laser means you're caught. Sometimes it can pick up a stray shot that is the guy next to you but usually if it goes off, it's direct hit. Now radar you can sniff out miles away. Jammers are the only good defense to lasers

Yes, I fully expect that I have picked up errant signals that have prevented me from being cited. But my laser detection function has definitely save me citations in the past. In fact, Laser is the preferred device around here and I have never been cited. Of course a jammer would be more effective but they are illegal here in California and carry a pretty stiff penalty similar to the use of a radar jammers which are not permitted under federal law.

Murray-
A lot depends on your local cops and how sharp they are. I can tell you that my detector paid for itself the first time I took a long ride on I95. In other places, you may chose to turn off some bands because the cops aren't using them, but there are many local devices that can plague you with false alerts. Or go for one of the GPS-enabled devices that learns to lock these out. The crowd-sourced models (Cobra, EscortLive) that also hook in to a smartphone by bluetooth are also valuable, because there is often a "cop ahead" warning well before a detector could spot them.
I've only been hit by lidar once, in Virginia, that high-enforcement state where the troopers are supposed to be pros. Very luckily I picked up the spill-over from someone at least 1/2 mile ahead of me, and while I was standing on the brake and saying "WTF IS THAT NOISE?" because the lidar alert IS an urgent one...I saw Officer Friendly pulled over under some bushes. So being able to detect lidar still has some value.
Laser jammers are a bit more problematic. While generally not specified as illegal (at least here in the Colonies) operating one still is interfering with a police officer performing his duties...and that could get nasty.
I wound up hardwiring into the overhead pod, and taking the power cord out just above the sun visor. There's enough space there to do it. Then the detector just velcro's onto the windshield, up high. (Suction cup off, industrial velcro on.) Much sleeker than one of the "big freaking hanging mounting arms".

While Jammers are not in violation of Federal law, they are illegal under most state laws and even in those where there ar no laws specific to Jammers, getting caught using one can result in a felony obstruction of justice charges. Much like what I am sure Redd is referring to regarding interference with the police officer's ability to perform his duties.

Redd your statement "A lot depends on your local cops and how sharp they are" .The SQ, similar to your state troopers, except they don't wear "smokey the bear" hats essentially report directly to the minister of revenue. They're very sharp and the fine for a RD.is $500-1K and they stomp it on the spot. They run the Spectre RDD so whatever I buy better be damn good for Lidar, which is dominant, and undetectable.Reading about the Uniden points me in that direction.I do mostly big highway drives so the false signalling issue doesn't concern me too much.Moose and spruce trees don't throw out to much Rf.

This is a great write-up. I just bought my 2010 S5 and it is so quiet, I find myself accidently going over the speedlimit. For this reason I'm investing in a detector and going to directly wire it to the rearview mirror. Thanks again for the info on how to wire this correctly!
