American companies are doing this too. Just for example, the next time you see a Ford F150 Ecoboost, walk up and wipe your finger on the inside of the tailpipe. It will come out charcoal black. Even trucks that actually meet EPA standards do not do that.
It is all a matter of who gets caught?

Those pollutant gases do not show up as black soot. Soot is a particulate.
My Land Rover uses the Ford Ecoboost engine and the tailpipe does get dirty - more than my diesel BMW exhaust...

bought my '14 (now I wish I'd leased it)- love the vehicle- have had many Audis over the years since my 1980 5000S... got a '88 quattro for a great deal thanks to 60 Minutes. Guess I'll be driving the Q for a while and hope most of this blows over.
For sure, I will NOT be taking it to the dealer for any service (I do my own oil and filter, and fuel filter changes already) as I don't want them doing any kind of reflash!!
Pray I don't need any waranty work or they'll probably reflash it even if I tell them not to...

Won't have to worry about the cost of resale issues - it will be all fixed on contract...
And don't sweat it too much - too many consumers will complain if serious MPG and performance suffers as a result of software fixes.

Sorry to tell you that soot is not the pollutant that the EPA is after - it's the nitrogen oxides, dioxide, carbon monoxide, and CO2.

Why EPA testing "should be necessary" as opposed to "just passing the test?"
VAG and others are developing gimmicks to just "pass the test".
For example here:
Vehicle Pollution
That said, the soot on tailpipes is actually particulate that, in addition to primarily sulfur dioxide which is highly toxic itself, does indeed contain hydrocarbons and even NOx and other pollutants. Vehicles producing a lot of tailpipe soot are [primarily at startup to get those cats warmed up quicker to "pass the stupid test"] dumping massive amounts of unburnt fuel right out the tailpipe. That IS pollution!
