Dashcam wiring
#3
It all depends on what type of Dash Cam you are wanting to install. If you have one that has a parking mode function, you need to have a live feed all the time for this function alone. Also it will need to be wired for the normal driving mode where it will need to be wired into the ignition circuit. If you choose one that has a rear dash camera feeding the front camera (yes many record onto the front camera micro SD Card), then it is not easy, because it is best to feed to the appropriate data/power wire in the roof lining and BEHIND the air bags. Definitely not a novice job. I am an ex aircraft engineer and IT professional and I found it best way to use an auto electrician who has done many vehicles before.
There again if you are just installing a single front facing camera, that just works when you are driving, then some novices might be able to do it.

Swapped my previous Audi for a B9 S5 last week, and I figured I would install my dash cam today. Boy was I wrong. First it took me a while to figure out that all the fuses on the left/driver side of the dash are always on. I don't feel like messing with one of those suspiciously cheap battery discharge prevention logic boards from China...I am perfectly fine with the cam being off when the ignition is off. So I moved on the to fuse box in the driver foot well area. But the little angled fuse adapter won't fit in properly because of the plastic casing around the fuse compartments. Wondering if any of you have some tips on how to properly tap into that fuse compartment?

Use a mirror tap from your dimming mirror.

Interesting... however for my dash cam I'll also need a 12 to 5V power converter, so that will probably not fit up there. Good suggestion though, thank you.

I feel like a dope, but I have tried to get at the fuse panel under the death panel and I just can’t figure out to do it. Can somebody post a picture or give me a quick run through. I’m leasing the car and I don’t want to destroy anything. Thanks!
