ESC & TPMS error. Car will not go into gear?
Hope everyone had a great new year. My family and I were driving back home from Utah to California the other night and as we were driving down highway 15 the car made a thunk and threw two errors on the dash. One was "Electronic Stability Control" fault and a TPMS malfunction. After it threw the error it went into some kind of limp mode and wouldnt shift gears.
I decided to pull over and see if I could reset it by stopping and then re-starting the car. I restarted and both errors were still there but it would not go into gear, I was able to use the emergency park override but it would not change gears. At this point I was pulled off on ZZYZS road with my family so I had it towed back to Victorville. I had a buddy of mine drive up my Vag-Com and tried to clear all the codes but it still persists, anyone have any idea what might be the problem? Not sure if this is related but a few days earlier it had the TPMS malfunction and I just did the in car TPMS reset and it went away.

That's major bad juju; no reply from the TCU...comms are down completely. Perhaps you ran over something in the roadway (the big Thump noise), which impacted some wiring to the tranny and/or the wheel ABS sensors, which are tied into lots of modules on this car.
I'd get the car up in the air and look for damaged wiring, but the noise you heard could also relate to a mechanical failure in the driveline also; best see what you can see, if you DIY. If not a car-minded person/DIYer, best to get a pro to look it over. Since there is no comms from the TCU, it appears likely that is the root cause, or central to the issue.
If you have a TDI that's still in extended warranty, the ECU & TCU, as well as tranny and engine block are covered items, and that's where I'd be towing it if there are no signs of a road hazard impact/wiring damaged beneath the car, etc., but only if it's in warranty.

If not a car-minded person/DIYer, best to get a pro to look it over. Since there is no comms from the TCU, it appears likely that is the root cause, or central to the issue.
If you have a TDI that's still in extended warranty, the ECU & TCU, as well as tranny and engine block are covered items, and that's where I'd be towing it if there are no signs of a road hazard impact/wiring damaged beneath the car, etc., but only if it's in warranty.
I'd get the car up in the air and look for damaged wiring, but the noise you heard could also relate to a mechanical failure in the driveline also; best see what you can see, if you DIY. Best you get to know this forum, as there's a fairly consistent set of known issues with parasitic battery drains (from door handles), emissions systems known issues, high-pressure fuel pumps, and coolant/oil leak points on the TDI models. The TDI warranty covers a lot more than the majority of owners realize. Dealerships are infamous for denying valid warranty claims.
You will want to pull your own warranty document by VIN # on the TDI settlement website, print a few copies or save to file, and get very familiar with that document. You will almost certainly get dealer 'denial of warranty claim' syndrome at some future point. Don't fret when it happens; just call Audi's corporate number for feedback/problem resolution.
Do be careful at the dealer with the financial responsibility form and/or accepting diagnostic fees they will often try to apply when you are taking it in for warranty services. They can't charge you a 'diagnostic fee' on warranted items. Be sure to ask them for your free fill up on Adblue fluid while it's in the Audi shop too...that's part of the emissions settlement, and a decent perk. You'll likely be more interested in the loaner car program, but you can also get reimbursed for a rental if the dealer has no loan cars available, which is often overlooked.
