Default Miles left after brake wear sensor comes on?

1. What are the average miles one can still drive once the Q7 brake wear sensor comes on? I was told by the dealer between 800 to 1,000 miles. True?

2. In your experience, do you find the dealer recommending replacing the rotors at the same time as the pads and if so, what is the reason for replacing the rotors too?

3. Does it make sense to have the pads (provided no rotor replacement is necessary) replaced as a DIY or by an independent repair shop instead of getting OEM pads from the Audi dealer?

Thanks for the experience and wisdom.

800 is really pushing it. I just had my pads an brakes done this past weekend. I asked the shop to let me see if the pads were truly low and they were paper thin. I had only driven the car about 200-300 miles after warning light appeared.

Rotors tend to be really thin to save om vehicle weight and wear down. I only had about 28k on my original set of brakes and rotors before having to replace them.

I went with an indy instead of dealer. I managed to save a a couple of hundred by doing so. Warranty was better than dealers as well but shop around! I used centric pads and rotors all the way around. Hope this helps...

Thanks for your info.

Your info tells me to get it done sooner than later and sounds like I will expect to pay for new rotors too. Will call one indy (service VW cars) across town to see whether they can do the pads and rotors.
