I needed 1 litre of oil at 6500km. The techs in Melbourne said it was compltely normal to burn oil. They are of course deisel engines. The grade of oil required is SAE 5W 40. I bought Pennzoil Platinum, 5 litres for about AUS$70. Ouch. But hey, the car needs it.

Re: UK 3.0 TDI, 6600 miles: Oil level fine, no top-ups required yet.
Just a technical explanation to what you are experiencing: the modern diesel engines have "working surfaces" (i.e. cylinders, valve guides, etc.) that are of an extremly high level of hardness. This implies they will last much longer in operation...but also that the surfaces will take longer to "settle together" and reduce the consumption of oil when the car is brand new. It is very common to see higher level of oil consumption at the very beginning (<10k km) and to show very limited consumption afterward (less than a 1 liter every 10k km). Therefore you should start worring only if it does not disappear within the next few months...

Thans for all your feedback, my local dealer has a though
He says that as there was no Oil in ( and I mean almost nothing showing on the dipstick ) he doubts the proper Oil check was done when the suppling dealer delivered it thus it never had the correct amount to start with.....Given this and what you guys have said I'm happy that the now topped up Oil level should behave normally
Thanks
