Rear License Plate Mounting (USA)
Anyone have any reasonable solution to the dreaded "spinning captive nut" problem on the rear of the 4M Q7?
I went to install my "summer" license plate frame (long story involving bunches of salt on our roads) & when I tried to remove the plate with the dealer's frame the top captive nuts just spun along with the screws. I finally got them off & found that the snap in captive nuts had elongated their holes allowing the captive nuts to spin. I removed the two torx screws in the plastic mounting base but something else is holding it on, otherwise I could get to the backside & devise some type of solution.
Anyone have a fix or know how that plastic mounting base is attached other than the two screws (I'm leery of excessive force when I don't know what I'm doing).

Thanks - would have never guessed such a high tech attachment method . I seem to remember this "spinning captive nut" was a known problem. Has your dealership had any?

Somewhat off-topic but this will protect your plate from salt (or dirt, etc.):
License Plate Covers - Clear Cover Waterproof License Plate Protector | WeatherTech.com
I'm using them and have no complaint.

I have a cover like that I've had for 15-20 years now, works like a champ. Not weather tech.
I just had to replace the tab on my plate and had the problem of one hold being stripped. I don't think it's going anywhere but will try the tape idea.

Weathertech cover is very well made, but fits quite tightly at the rear due to the rear view cam. The small inconvenience is I have to remount it every year for the new tab.

Technically they're illegal here in IL, but that wouldn't really deter me. I have a slightly smoked one on the front of both my A4 & Q7 that protects the front plate from debris, salt, etc. Plus it looks good on the Glacier White cars.

Although not enforced by many officers, in FL is illegal to have any, and i mean any type of covering on a license plate. They will get you under this law: Statutes & Constitution :View Statutes : Online Sunshine
It was just recently brought to light in a case that i saw in the news a few months back:
Your license plate may be illegal under new law - NBC-2.com WBBH News for Fort Myers, Cape Coral & Naples, Florida

I went to the local dealer and they replaced with front mounted plastic inserts no/charge.
There is sticky tape behind the plastic holder - the service dept. knows how hard to pull.

I went to the dealer and got the entire bracket replaced.
