Am I correct to assume that current Audis use the indirect method?
(I think 10 years ago they used an actual pressure sensor mounted on the inside of the tire valve)

Correct. Current Audis use indirect (wheel speed) method for TPMS. At least for the models I'm familiar with.

I believe they are all indirect except for A8/S8 and RS 7.

Yes on my wife's 2016 Cayenne Diesel, her front 19" Good Year tires were exactly like that. My tire shop guy said it's no big deal and could probably get another 10~15K out of them but I replaced them at around 27K with Michelin tires

Audi put rear tires on front and now at 20k the original rear tires now on the front look even worse. As of today they are saying tires should be fine as you stated. But I’m not buying it. I believe something isn’t right with that Good Year tire.
