1983 Ur Quattro A/C Retrofit
My current A/C compressor is frozen. I talked with my Audi mechanic and he says he can get a used unit and they will have to upgrade some things to use the non-freon coolant. His price was actually not bad to retrofit. However, he is leery of using a used compressor that maybe has a 60 day warranty given that it may not hold up. He has not found anyone that rebuilds the original compressors. Does anyone know if anyone rebuilds the compressors or if rebuilt units are available anywhere? Thanks

A/C retrofit
That compressor is called a York Roto-Lock Square head. It looks very much like this, but with hose connections on the top.
If you look around hard enough, you can find these compressors brand new. The VW Beetles used them, and Mack trucks were using them up until recently. I found one in Arizona at an A/C shop (4 Seasons) on the shelf. It was all dusty like a fine old wine. I think it cost me around $130 USD. Right now it is still going strong with R134A and hasn't given me any problems in 4 years.

I bought a brand new (although it did look rebuilt) compressor in 2005 just prior to driving out to UPG 05 CT. I think it was about $250 IIRC. I had converted to R134 - and still run R134 - although frankly if I wer to do it over I would stay with R12. I think I'll actually convert back...
