Brigdestone tire question

Brigdestone tire question
I know alot of people here have gone with the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R in a 275.
But who has gone with the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A.
Both are about the same price and I was wondering if there is a huge difference in grip and wear with the R tire.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Brigdestone tire question
I just bought the RE050A's from Tire Rack for my 2007 RS4 purchased last month. I can only offer my opinion on a relative basis compared to the Pirelli P Zero's that were on the car. The only differnce I noted was the the P zero's had more grip on the turns compared to the RE050A's. I do not run the car on the track, so I'm not really pushing the tires to the limit. To me there is only an appreciable gain with the P Zero's which is not worth the cost. I did my research on Tire Rack and the RE050A's seem to provide good performance at a reasonable price.

Good question...
The RE-01R excels at dry grip. The RE050 also has very good dry grip, although not on par with the RE-01R. Despite this, I believe the RE050 will also wear faster. That being said, you'd be fortunate to get 10k miles out of either.
The RE-01R is a great dry performance tire, but I wouldn't put a 275 tire on a 9" rim. I know lots of guys here are doing it. The contact patch is not optimal, and the extra width is just adding flex to the sidewall. Best rule of thumb for tire wear and performance it to have a tire with a tread width about the same as the rim width. The 275 tire has a tread width of 10.1" and the 245 has a tread width of 9.0" (Tirerack specs). Its a tough call.

For 'pure' performance, the RE-01R is the ticket. The 050's are a more rounded..
performer for the street. The 01R fits with the Yokohama Neova and the Dunlop Z1...street/track performers and probably not a good pick. You look the new Goodyear F1 Asymmetric? Check out the Tirerack Comparison Test. It's outperformed most tires in its category, including the 050. If you are NOT going to track the car this tire is all you need. I don't know what size you want so you'll have to check the spec for this.

Click for specs
