Default Brother is moving to germany for 3 years and works for the Govt. Can he

buy an rs4 avant or r34 Skyline and bring it back to the states after his stay and have it registered? I have no idea about this stuff.

Default IIRC...

...it could be registered in the US *temporarily*. People who are active military often bring cars here if they're transferred to the US, but IIRC the DOT only allows them to be registered here for a limited amount of time. To do it permanently would require the car go through federalization, which is a lengthy and expensive process.

Not speaking from experience, just what I recall reading over the years.

Default Well, cars cost on average more than 20% more in Germany. On top of that, consider $30k+ to

reimport it. If you like the idea of a $150,000 RS4, then go for it!

Default Is your brother in the military or does he just work as a government employee?

I am in the military and have lived in Germany for over three years now. There are military rates for Audi's here, but im not positive if they are also for regular government employees. I think they are available for govt employees too though.

Anyways, recently audi's military rates have gotten worse. They actually price the cars at exactly $25 below us MSRP now. The only real advantage is that we dont have to pay any taxes when purchasing the car. That can save alot at purchase time, but depending on what state you try to register your car in when you reeturn to the states he could end up paying the taxes as though it was bought new in that state. Bullcrap I know, but that is the way it is in some states unfortunately. I didnt have to pay any in Alabama, but I do believe that was only because I was military. I know florida and texas dont charge taxes though.

When I bought my S4 here last year, I paid about $1000 below MSRP and no taxes so it was a pretty good deal considering I got a very early production slot for the B7. For what it is worth, the price of an RS4 here for military prices right now is $65,975 before any options. He can only get an American spec car for this price though. He will pay 70,000 euros for the sedan and 71,500 euro for the avant if he tries to buy it in euro spec from a german dealer. I dont know if you have seen the exchange rates lately, but that is $93,000 for the avant right now.

If he has any questions feel free to shoot me an email as I have purchased a car over here and brought it back to the statees and then brought it back here to gerrmany in the past year. Also, where is he going to be working? I live in Heidelberg. Hope this helps.

Default I think around Rheinberg, I will have to have him shoot you an email if he has questions

he said he was going to be speaking to someone Thursday that is in the same situation he will be in.

I think he is leaning towards an a6 though. Probably just american spec. Is it worth leasing a car there for 3 years or are the prices ridiculious? He told me he gets gas vouchers at american prices? or something to that effect.
