Default engine oil temp hit...

268 at the track yesterday! Does that seem really high?

It was the last lap of the fourth session with four laps per session. So a total of 16 laps at Cal Speed Way.

Thanks

Highest I've ever heard of. Are you a little low on oil?

Not at all. I had it topped off on Friday. This scares me about the car a lot.

Default Here is the break down of my daily oil temp:

City driving - 225

Freeway driving - 114 (but it did hit 252 in traffic one day last week)

Track day - averages about 255 but did spike at 268

Something to be concerned with here?

And if I did call the dealer do I share that I got that temp tracking it?

Default Normal.

I've seen temperatures that high at all the events I've attended, running Motul 0W-40, RLI BioSyn 5W-40, and RLI BioSyn 40W. Then followed by oil analysis after the event. Motul gets thrashed pretty hard and loses viscosity, but still protects the engine, with no increase in wear. RLI just keeps on trucking, and was good for 10K miles total and about 4 hours of track time at two tracks.

You might want to change your oil.

I have my next service in about 1500 miles... can it wait so it is covered by Audi?

I would hait to go and pay 260 for an oil change and then just do it again in 1500 miles.

Thanks

Default Normal, this engine seems to be designed to run hot

Depending on the oil 200 to 220 is the normal operating temperature range. Some oils keep the engine temperature on the cooler side, and others keep it on the warmer side. Engine oils that are beginning to load up with fuel will generally run higher temperatures, as the specific gravity of the oil is reduced due to fuel loading.

Under high throttle and in traffic temps will easily elevate by an additional 40-50F. I think I've seen as high as 276 myself on the track.
