Default oil change - PLEASE HELP

Folks
Just did my first oil change on the RS4(2k) - I paid myself. On my way back from the dealer my low oil indicator came on in GREEN.

I noticed when I saw on the dip stick that there was not a drop of oil showing, maybe a little close to the MIN on the stick. I was furious and called the dealer, going in tomorrow to have a chat. I put 1.5 qt of oil, the light went away and noticed now my level is between MIN and MAX.

Questions

The dealer charged me for 9 QTS - do you think they put only 7. In talking to to dealer they told me that if the dip stick is not showing anything, I could be low by 2 qts. Any truth to this.

Do you think I may have suffered any damage

is it okay to drive 40 miles tomorrow with a level between MIN and MAX so they can see it.

Can the computer show them that I had a oil low light on.

I just don't want to show up with oil level okay and they tell me that there is nothing wrong.

Many thanks for your thoughts

Default Re: oil change - PLEASE HELP

last ten days experience I had with my own sprint blue RS4.

I drove 400 miles before I check the oil level. Not even on the MIN. Added 2 liters (a bit over 2 quarts) and the stick level was in the middle of MIN-MAX. *NO* oil lights, NEVER.
Drove back and checked oil. Not much difference. Changed oil on 700 miles with 10+ quarts of oil ... And it didn't go to MAX on the stick.. (If memory serves me). Now the level (after 300+ miles is on MIN and the oil lights never went on).

Oil temperatures normal (for me) at 100-108 Celcius depending on way of driving and could go up to 112 Celcius when breaking her in on 3rd/4th gear..

Absolutely no indication of faults so far and no oil alarms.. I'm puzzled as well, but I don't think (personal view!) you'll have any problems..

your response makes me feel better but also don't understand whats happening with the car. Clearly if the oil level low is indicating and it went away after I added more, it leads me to believe that the oil was low but your experience challenges my thinking. I am going to the dealer tomorrow and have him explain it to me.

Thanks a lot

Default A complete oil change takes ten (10) quarts, the manual says less

But with a filter it will be 10. Run the car with the oil in the middle of the min/max marks not at the max level, seems to use more when you top it up in my experience.

Default I had the same problem once with the dealer

low oil light came on < 100 miles after an oil change. Had to add 1.5 qts. Car never went back to that dealer again.

Next oil change, used 10 quarts, now, 3000 miles later, no Oil light ever!!

So, the conclusion is, use 10 quarts of oil with filter.

Default Oil capacity on oil and filter change is actually somewhere around 9.8 L

10.4 Qts. That takes you to the top of the fill area. Then engine will consume copious amounts of oil in the 1st 1000 miles, and more later on if you are too gentle with the break-in, IMO. If the weather is cold, it will also consume more oil initially.

But, that will teach you to check the dealer next time. I've had the opposite experience. I've brought in 10 L of oil during a change and had the tech use it all, and found that the oil level was a bit high. The next time, the tech brought me back to the service bay to confirm the level.

I went back and had a chat with the dealer. The problem was not putting 9 qts, the problem was not checking the level after starting up the car. You always check the level after running the car, basic 101 for a mechanic. They felt so sorry, they gave me a free car wash and free qts of oil.

Thank god for the low oil indicator light.

Thanks

Default Hey, at least they fessed up. Gotta give 'em credit for that

Now check the level every time before you drive off from the dealer.
