both are great engines, but as far as speed, RWD will always win.
But who cares... we can smoke 911's, put up a good fight with the new M3 and then go skiing.

not really. an AWD car with the same power to weight ratio as a competing RWD car
will usually destroy the RWD car coming out of corners- the power is easier to put down faster. This is especially true with powerful cars, where traction becomes more important.
The question is whether the BMWs power:weight benefit is enough to overcome it's traction defect, especially with usable street tires.

AWD you can mash the pedal more out of the corner but RWD usually can carry more speed
RWD cars tend to understeer less and can carry more speed through the corner. generalizations
I was talking about a straight line though.
