Default Being in Chicago, a narrower tire woudl probably suit me, and the mounds of snow and slush

much better, no?

Default You can use stock tire width but I went with narrower 225/45/18. I live in Green Bay, WI so lots of

snow to deal with and the roads around here really took a beating this past winter. The 225/45/18 size tire has nearly identical circumference to stock tire size.

Default Thanks!

Rubber: Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25's 255/40
wheels: TRMotorsport MT1 at 18 x 8.5

Live in RI, made it through winter without any issues whatsoever. Got tpms as well with the setup. Really like it!

Default Here's what to do and here's why.....

Go with an 18x8.5" wheel and 255/40/18 tires.

The slightly smaller wheels will give you a little more side wall to handle the pot holes, frost heaves, etc that pop up in winter and spring.

By staying with the stock width, you minimize the loss of traction and handling. While some will argue that you should go narrower, it really isn't necessary with the very sophisticated all wheel drive system on the RS4. Also, in the snowiest climates, they are usually pretty good at clearing roads, so the actual number of days that you may be driving in snow deep enough that a 225 tire would have any measuraeable benefit over the 255 tire is minimal to non-existent.

I have 255/35/19 Dunlop Winter Sport 3D on a second set of stock wheels. I easily plowed through 8-10" of snow last winter, and for the 95% of the time that there road is basically clear or nearly clear, I had the benefits of better traction, handling and looks.

All those "silly numbers" are not so silly. Educate yourself a little. The first number is the tread width of the tire in millimeters. The second number is the aspect ratio, which is the percentage that the sidewall height is relative to width. A 255/35 tire, therefore, has a sidewall height that is 35% of the tire width, or 255mm x 0.35, or 89.35mm. The following letters represent the speed rating. W, Y, Z is what you are looking for basicallly. The final number is the wheel diamter that the tire is made for.
