Default Alternator Dead? Need confirmation

Driving to work this morning, battery warning light comes on. By the time I had driven 25 miles, The cluster lights had flickered and died, the radio had shut off, lights went out, hvac stopped, and the only operational electrical components were the warning lights for brakes, abs, battery, and ESP. Car died and wouldn't turn over after 25 miles(~1 miler from work). I'm having the car towed home. Do you guys think my initial diagnosis of a faulty alternator is accurate Thanks.

could just be a broken or slipping serpentine belt...

Didn't consider that. Slipping serp. belt would not allow the alt. to charge the battery. Same result. I'll check it and post the results. Thanks.

don't leave out the possibility of a bad\shorted battery, it's not uncommon on 4-5 year old cars

Default Is there a way to troubleshoot a shorted battery?

Or just replace it and hope for the best...

Default I would say probably an alternator. The car dies bc it was using the power from the battery

to run everything, including coil packs, and plugs. Usually if you try to jump a car with a bad alt, it will die as soon as you take the jumper leads off..

Default If the battery is three years old or more - just replace it -

They can fail at year three on so you might as well do that anyway

Would a faulty brake light switch cause the battery to drain faster than the alt could charge it?

Default Am dealing with this now. Broken belt hardly visible.

Its so tight between radiator and pulleys that it was hard to see at first that the reason the car died was because the battery drained due to a broken alternator belt.
