That was my reaction
I was 16 in 1967 when my friend had the GTX 440. I thought the acceleration was amazing, absolutely unbelievable. But of course the car couldn't do anything *but* accelerate.
That's why I was so surprised to discover the almost identical 0-60 times between that car and my Avant.
How to explain it? In '67, I was driving a clapped-out '56 Plymouth station wagon, with a V-8 but a 2 speed push button automatic transmission. The contrast between the two cars was unimaginable.
But since then, I've steadily moved up in bhp, from my original 115 bhp Audi 4000, through a series of cars culminating in two B5S4's and now the B6. So I've gotten accustomed to more and more power - thus the lack of astonishment at the power of the new car.
Plus - aren't memories from that long ago always a little rosier?

With stock tires, the 0-60 times would be comparable but with
the wider, stickier aftermarket tires that most people put on those big blocks back then, the acceleration WAS pretty awesome.

exactly, why bother comparing?
two different animals, when you want true visceral performance with modern technology, perfectly refined, rufen Sie Ihre deutschen Ingenieure an..
if you want a huge-*** car with thicker sheet metal than MBT armor, an engine that gets gallons to the mile, the pervasive smell of gasoline and a rear-main seal leak you'll never fix, exhaust so loud it peels paint off shutters, and the ability to leave half of your bias-ply tires embedded in the tarmac with the twitch of a foot, there's only one logical choice..
make mine one of each, please!
