Since the engines are identical,it is important that you break the engine in properly. MANY who followed Audi's recommendation have persitant oil consumption issues. Audi insists that consumption of 1 qt /1K miles is within normal limits. I as well as others find that to be excessive. I really don't want to start a contoversy, BUT many of us (including myself) have NOT followed Audi's recommendations an have experienced little or NO oil consumption. IMHO, if you drive this car very conservatively in the first 1000 miles, you really put yourself at risk for persistant oils consumption problems. You need to consider that you only have one opertunity to break in the engine and you NEED to get the piston rings to seat fully ASAP. To do this it is necessary to do wide open throttle runs at or near redline followed by engine breaking. (Not from a standing start as in a drag race). Check out the Moto Man link. Also remember that the piston walls are made of Alusil which is extremely hard. This means that it will take longer than the first 20 miles to get the piston rings to seat totally, but not a whole lot more. Its your car so you can do what you like, But if you follow this advise, you'll be thanking me later.

Moto man's alternative break in theory.

Anyone know what oil I can use to top off my factory oil until my first oil change?
Dinosaur oil or snythetic + the specific weight used by the factory.
It's a no brainer to me to have syn oil put in when I get an oil change.
TIA

Thanks for the info doc...
I'm probably middle of the road between the 2 theories. I have 850 miles on the clock, and I've spent 95% of my time at or under 4500. But go WOT to only about 6500 followed by heavy engine braking/deacceleration. I usually use 3rd gear. This is difficult to do with a TIP, you gotta make sure the rev's are high enough when you go WOT, or even in TIP mode, it downshifts for you. I HATE THAT! So far I'm happy with my break-in. We'll see how oil consumption and engine performance is over time. I have yet to WOT from a stop, waiting paitently for that day...

The article also says not to "break in" with synthetic oil. Don't S4's come with syntho oil? If so, has anyone tried this described technique and actually gone through the trouble of draining and refilling 11+ quarts of oil? Just curious...
