Ready to Buy, Just drove an M3 and a 545i and..
I must say the M3 is not what I expected. Its a fast car, but like everyone says for everyday riving, its not the car, espically in the Boston Area. So I drove the 545i 6-Speed.
I am coming out of a 540i 6 speed. The car is alot faster than my old car and it does handle good though the active steering takes a little getting use to. However, becasue of my height, you still are not able to have a person sit behind me.
Which bring me to the S4. My last test drive, I had a blast in this car. I like it alot better than the M3 mainly for the reason of the V-8 enging. With the M3, you have to stay on the engine and keep it wound up. With the S4, no matter what gear you are in, mash it and your stuck to the seat. I like that type of composure and confidence.
Just blurting out my thoughts, but I am going to drive the S4 again to make sure but I am really heading in that direction.

I felt the same about the m3. How would you feel hav..
ing the 545 with the m5 coming out? The same as i will feel when the rs4 is out, I guess. The 5 series shape is starting to appeal to me more and more. Overall it is a much more convincing design than the 7 or the new 3, judging from the photos.

I was in the same space...
Had a 328 and thought I was going to buy an M3. Waited until the 545 came out and drove it a few times. Bought the S4, my first Audi, and love it. I think the S4 is closer to the 545/E39 M5 than the M3.

I am not alone
I have been wracking my brain for some time now. I feel like if I go to the 545 then I am basically still in the same vehicle, even though its different, etc. I have had BMW's for the last 6 years, but I think now is the time for a change. I will never leave a german made car though.
Also with the S4, the drivetrain and the engine work so well together. I love the way the shift feels, the short throws, etc.

What about a used 996? Comparing my old 996 to my current S4, both have their place. The 996 was a LOT of fun in the summer, but since I didn't have the 4S, it sucked in the winter. Also, no cargo space. But, you can buy a used 996 plus a used Cherokee for about what the 545 will cost you. The S4 is a good combo for the money, especially with the V8.

A test drive does not do justice to this car. Plus
The S4 becomes even quicker after 5k miles. The engines are built tight and take a while to loosen up. I was not originally impressed with the performance during my first test drive. I guess having 5 ocupants in the car slowed it down a little!

Maybe close to the 545 but NOT the E39 M5!
The E39 M5 is one amazing machine. The S4 does not push you back in the seat like the E39 M5 does. These two cars are not comparable IMO. M5 is in a different league than the B6 S4.

What I said was
"I think the S4 is closer to the 545/E39 M5 than the M3." I was very vauge as to the reference. Regardless, I think the E39 M5 is a great car and the S4 is compararble, albeit at ~$20k less.
