Default Simple, all B6 platform cars gained weight....

...that's what 50% stiffer structure demands.

I'm sure they could've stiffened the car without increasing weight too much, but then they'd probalby drive the cost up.

I believe a 1.8T B6 is about 175lbs heavier than the 1.8T B5 car...main difference is in structural improvements.

Don't forget, the transmission is also all new, and I'm not sure how much that weighs. Either way, I agree that 3825 is a hell of a lot of weight...

I mean you are within shouting distance of M5 weight there, for a much smaller car.

Default 5 series BMW's are by no means spacious cars.

What do they have, maybe 2-3" more rear legroom than a B6 S4?

According to Edmunds: Rear legroom B6 A4 = 34.3", BMW 5-series = 34.2"

The new BMW 5-Series is bigger than outgoing model, and weighs less. Now that's good engineering!

They mention it twice, so it's not a misprint

Default I've got a 5-series and it's considerably wider inside than the B6. The S4 is indeed porky..

but with the V8 and new suspension the extra 250lbs won't likely be felt except maybe on the track.

Default Definately, they used aluminum extensively, and that

is certainly a good improvement. The new 545 is going to be a very quick car, nevermind the new M5.
