Tips? Rough 1-2 Shifts Accelerating Faster than Granny
Hi there,
Well, I just got in my possession a beautiful S4. It's a blast to drive (no surprise) and I understand what I need to do to get those smooth granny shifts. However, to accelerate anything faster than normal city driving has gotten me quite frustrated.
Even if I don't try to blast through the gears, but just shift from 1->2 at a higher RPM (around 5k), I always get a jolt/shift shock when going into second. I've tried a bunch of different things, varying the speed at which I release the clutch and apply the gas; all attempts don't seem to be smooth.
The only good thing is I haven't burned my clutch, so I've got that going for me, ha.
I'm sure to not be the only one who has experienced this. Any fine drivers out there with some tips of what works for you or what I should try?
Thanks!

From my experience with 3 B8 S4 MTs. there is a clutch problem in this car. Others have experienced it as well. Some will blame it on driver error. In my case, on 2 occasions with my 2010, I shifted 1/2 WOT and the clutch pedal just remained on the floor, engine revving and car going nowhere. That is not normal. Subsequently, I have been very wary to shift 1/2 WOT. Just for fun, try changing between Auto and Dynamic and see if anything changes.

Got back from a nice, sunny drive and tried out the different modes.
I suspected that part of the jolt was caused due to the lack of enough gas following the shift change into 2nd as I release the clutch. I found less jolt in dynamic mode given the more responsive throttle.
It makes sense to a degree: revs are higher in 1st; as the clutch is depressed the revs only drop to say 3-4k as opposed to 1-2k when cruising. Hence, more gas would be required in order to continue the quicker acceleration.
I could be completely wrong. Maybe others can chime in and confirm my (in)sanity.
