If anyone else is struggling like I was (see my post from this summer) to remove the trim to access the mirror tap, I bring good news. I struggled with removing the large trim piece between the headliner and mirror but was able to do it using the technique shown in the video posted by jgdiablo. The key is to insert your trim removal tool near one of the two front clips, rotate the tool 90 degrees so that the prying end is perpendicular to the trim. Use a forceful prying motion, and the clip will release. Rinse and repeat on the other clip and you're in business. It's going to feel like you're going to break the plastic trim piece, and it will flex a lot, but it will pop out. Everything else after that is easy.
You can feel confident putting some muscle into prying the trim off because, worst case scenario, if you break it you can buy a new one. It's part no. 8W0-857-519-4PK and can be had for about $33 (e.g., here's one). You can also replace the middle trim piece if needed (8W0-858-937-4PK) which is also cheap. The only piece you don't want to break is the end piece nearest the glass, as that cannot be purchased separately: it is part of the entire mirror assembly (8W0-857-511-B-9B9) and that's about $500.
Good luck!
