Default Aftermarket brake questions...

I'm not happy having to pay $350-400 for 8 tiny performance "proprietary" front brake pads, so I'm looking to upgrade to regular 2 pad 4 piston calipers and possibly the rotors too.

Looking at the available choices I see the APR and Stoptech calipers look "remarkably" alike, is there any actual difference in brake pads / setup and how hard is it to get brake pads for these aftermarket setups? How about the Porsche 993 TT setup, it seems to work with the original size rotors? Are pads easily available?

Default Stoptech is making at least some portion of APR's offering. There are differences, but the primary

engineering came from Stoptech - not APR.

Brake pads are quite easy to get for these brakes - they are a match for a 95 Porsche 911. Many options for pads and multiple sources. They are also quite simple to replace with an allen wrench.

Can't help you with the 993 TT side of the picture.....

Default Hmm. I guess it can be argued that 8 proprietary pads for $350-400 is better

than 4 proprietary pads for $350 and change. That's how much my Pagid's cost for the Brembo kit.

Gotta pay to play.

Default So let's see...

Say you can save $100 per set of pads.

If you spring for $2000 for an aftermarket kit, it would take you, what, 20 pad changes to make it back up?

Hmmm... Sounds like the Chewbacca Defense.

So what's your point -- are you going to be using the car on the track?

Default Well looking at the kits pads are more like $150...

So at a $250 savings that would only be 8 sets of pads, which I know I can go through in a few years. Plus during all that time I'll have real braking power

As for my defense...

"Ladies and Gentlemen of this supposed jury, my accusers would certainly
want you to believe I am trying to make up a silly reason to buy cool looking S4 brakes, and they make a good case. Hell, I almost feel guilty myself. But Ladies and Gentlemen of this supposed jury, I have one final thing I want you to consider.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet
Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it. That does not make sense. Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot-tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor with a bunch of two-foot-tall Ewoks. That does not make sense.

But more important, you have to ask yourself what does this have to do with this case. Nothing. Ladies and Gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case. It does not make sense. Look at me. I'm an S4 owner and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca. Does that make sense? Ladies and Gentlemen I am not making any sense. None of this makes sense.

And so you have to remember when you're in that jury room deliberating and conjugating the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No. Ladies and Gentlemen of this supposed jury it does not make sense. If Chewbacca lives on Endor you must acquit.

I know I seem guilty. But ladies and gentlemen this is Chewbacca. Now think about that for one minute. That does not make sense. Why am I talking about Chewbacca when a man's life is on the line? Why? I'll tell you why. I don't know. It doesn't make sense. If Chewbacca does not make sense you must acquit. Here look at the monkey , look at the silly monkey.

The defense rests."

Default Re: stoptech pads = same as 993 TT rear pads

per Dave Zeckhausen on the BMW list...." sticker that may have been created by StopTech was also affixed to the box which said:

63-813-0372
Pagid Sport Pad
U1204 w/Shim

Rear pads have a surface area of approx 62.5 sqcm....fronts are approx 75.5sq cm. I don't know if Stoptech uses a larger caliper for the Audi kits vs BMW but I doubt it. SD

Default High performance street pads are $95

DrSmile,

The Standard StopTech ST40 high performance pad (good for Street and autocross, but not full race)is the AXXIS Ultimate and current retail is $95 a set. Note the AXXIS Ultimate is not a race pad.

This price of the AXXIS Ultimate pad in the next year will come down as more distributors come on line.

The real advantage to an upgrade is the range of race pads that becomes available to you and the increase in heat capacity of the system. If you are just driving on the street the larger better cooling rotors will last longer than stock.

There will be more aftermarket offerings of the stock pad set as the S-4 ages. The aftermarket pad industry usually waits for cars to start coming off of waranty before they manufacture replacement pads. Once more aftermarket pad companies come on line that $350-$400 number for the S4 pad should come down in price.
