Anyone ever try or here of someone trying to use air-water intercooler on the 2.7t?

It wasn't cost effective...
I have the system on my car. Only 2 or 3 were produced. Those used heavily modified stock IC cores. AWE could not find an aftermarket unit to match the size,flow, and cooling requirements provided by the modified cores. They decided buying new stock cores and modifying them would not be cost effective and the project was eventually shelved. The system has performed very well for me, but to be honest, I am not very hard on the car. I asked Todd if their current sytem was better than the one I had; thinking I would buy the new one if there was a significant improvement. He told me the system on my car was still superior to their current offering.
