Default AoA says my battery keeps getting run down by aftermarket stereo, alternator damaged

Audi of American says that my alternator is damaged and my battery run down by my aftermarket audio system.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Can someone recommend a high performance alternator replacement?

Thanks,

danielr

Default uhhh, upgrading the alternator isn't the problem

If you're not using it without the engine running, then there's got to me some kind of short in the wiring. I dunno, can you check to see if the power line's pulling current when the engine is off?

I'd guess that what's happening is something is running the battery low when it's off and working the alternator heavy when you start it up again.

Wow, good luck in finding one. How many amps are you running?

Default This happened to an old Celica of mine...

First off, the alternator was not powerful enough to handle the 60-70 amps of current my amps were drawing. Second off, starting the car with a drained battery was likened to jump starting a car, which will kill an alternator. Third off, I was even running a second battery in the trunk that powered the amplifiers and was isolated via a dual battery isolator. Phoenix Gold made the dual battery isolator (which I still have and would sell cheap to anyone that wants it), but I don't remember who made aftermarket alternators back then or if they still do now (maybe it was PG?). Post in audio forum for more insight. If you're running less than 50 amps on your S4, you shouldn't have a problem UNLESS you're draining the battery by playing it with the engine off for substantial periods of time (20-30 minutes or more).<p><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/LCPawsig1.jpg">

Default Solutions/Suggestions . . .

1. Get aftermarket battery! I prefer Odyssey because they're dry cell, not gel like Optima.
The PC 1200 fits perfectly in our battery compartment, but it's not as wide as stock battery. Should be about $200. Worth every penny!!!

2. Capacitors. Do you have any? Are you running subs? I would look into a .5 Farad or 1.0 Farad depending on how many watts you're running.

3. Alternator - This is the hard part. Most everyone make high output alternators for everyone else except Audi/VW (my experience). I spent many hours trying to find a high-output alternator to run my system, but no luck. You could have someone rebuild one for you to achieve this, but that's up to you. I'm running close to 1000 watts, so believe me when I say I needed more juice. Get the Odyssey battery, you won't be disappointed.

And just so you don't think I'm playing around, my install pics are on page 6 of the Audio forum today. Or cut & paste this: https://www.audiworld.com/forum/m/audio/msgs/2712.phtml

Hope this helps! And ALMOST ALWAYS play your stereo with the car running! Easiest way to avoid draining the battery.<p>"I'm that Blue Menace in your rear view!!!"

Default Here's what I'm running.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Here's what I'm running:

Alpine 7941 head unit
Alpine DSP processor (doesn't power down with other items)

2x Alpine 4 channel amps

1 x capacitor

Default Hard to believe re; alternator. The stock one is 120 amp, and cannot be overloaded, just stops

making any more!<p>Jim De Arras

How much power you running out of your system? I'd get a new battery and a 1.0 Cap
