APR Chip nightmare

APR Chip nightmare
How many folks has this happened to? Driving along in rush hour traffic, minding my own business in the far left lane, car just flat out shuts off. Able to somehow coast across three lanes of traffic over to the shoulder without causing a huge pileup. Happy to know I have Audi Assurance. Not happy that it takes 4 freakin hours to get a flatbed with the right hook to connect to the front tow loop. Not happy that it's pouring rain the entire time and I miss my dinner meeting with my client who flew in from out of town. And REALLY NOT HAPPY that the issue is traced to my 4 week old APR chip.
Got to love these chips.....

Just talked to APR
I spoke to Jonathon. Most likely it's the solder job, not the chip itself. He admitted to knowing of a few chip failures, but most failures result from improper soldering. They are calling the distributor who did the work.

For future reference, if you ever need towing, there
are a total of 6 tow points on Audi vehicles. The front and back are to really only be used in emergencies. If you look under your car and in the unibody there are 4 rubber grommets located near each wheel (the front are about 6 inches back from the wheels, the rear are about 6 inches in front of the wheels) Remove the grommets and the flatbed will be able to use the hookups and properly winch the car. Any experiences towtruck driver knows this and AoA should be passing this on to their drivers.

Same with my TT, and other cars... (more)
While at the APR BBQ a guy with an A4/S4 had the same issue. I remember them taking his ECU out and driving it to APR, fixing the solder joints and going back. Crazy!
My Audi TT had the same problem, so I blew $900 to have the dealership figure it out, and then charge me labor and a new ECU because it wasn't warranty covered (due to chipping ECU). Luckily APR fixed the ECU, and I sold the spare for $750, costing me only $150.
Either way, on VWvortex I've heard of countless stories like that, GIAC, APR, etc... it just happens... that is the risk you take of a hand-prep'd solder, not a robot who is perfect (grin).
Sorry to hear your luck... they'll fix it for ya, but that doesnt fix the PITA it was... so... cheerio... :-)
