Default Better mileage with 94 octane?

I took a little road trip this weekend, and on the return leg, I filled up with Sunoco 94 instead of my usual Exxon/Texaco 93. Well, taking the exact same route both ways, and driving at about the same level of enthusiasm, I seemed to average 1 mpg better on the 94 (according to the trip computer). Any thoughts?

I BELIEVE you should get lower MPG w/ oxygenated gas like Sunoco.

Default I believe it...(more)

The following chart is a summary of all the gas I've put into my S4. I don't think the Texaco and Exxon figures are reliable, since there are only two samples. But I've averaged 19.8 MPG in 20 fill-ups of Sunoco 94 versus 19.0 MPG and 18.6 MPG for 24 fill-ups of Mobil and Chevron 93. If you average the Chevron and Mobil fill-ups, you end up with about 18.8 MPG, or 1 MPG less than the Sunoco 94.

Also, these figures are from calculated MPG, not the trip computer which is optimistic by about 2 MPG.

Default How many different octane ratings you got at the pump?

Here in CA we only have 87,89, and 91.

Default I've been testing that for the last couple months, I'm getting average of 2-3 mpg more on 94

My 1993 S4 is a pig, I was running ave of 17 on mobil 93, I'm seeing 19's and 20's on tanks of sunoco 94.

Default FWIW I noticed almost no average MPG difference btw 93 & 94.

68 samples of 93 octane = 18.11 MPG
47 samples of 94 octane = 18.17 MPG

Also calculated and not from trip computer.

Default Yeah, that's a possibility - most of the terrain was mountaneous

However, there were plenty of long uphills and downhills both ways, and traffic was about the same each way, also.

Most stations have 87, 89, and 93. Sunoco also has 94.
