Also, it's an OBD1 system.

Default I don't have the dang charger/elect outlet thing for it. I think this is an omen for Sears Point :-(

You're right though. I gotta get up real early and install my replacement Baileys.

Nothing like waking up the neighbors at 6 am by pounding and cursing at the S4 bright and early.

Default Could be the laptop

Some laptop just don;t work well with the VAG-TOOL. I had on and off performance with a new VAG-TOOL and an IBM Thinkpad 600e. Sometimes it would connect, other times it would fail. Most of the time it would take extra long or even time out communicating with the ECU.

Nothing was using the ports... settings were fine.

I tired everything regarding the settings of the serial ports... etc, nothing helped.

I tried a different laptop, an IBM Thinkpad A20P. <BAM> No problem. Communcation, nice and fast. Same OS (Win 2000)

Default vwtool is just not as reliable as VAGCON.

i have similar problem every now and then on my vwtools.. regardless rather it is onboard serial or pcmcia... vs, on the same comupter i have no problem running VAGCON!

the other problem could be your serial cable is bad.. make sure it is not bend.

Default It's the mac users curse!

bwahahaha...sorry. I'm pretty sure you're supposed to use com1 or com2 aren't you? Did you try jiggling the connector inside around the car side connection? Sometime you have to futz with it. Otherwise I would try changing the comport.

Make sure you're not running HotSync (for PalmPilot), or any other app that may use the Comm Port.
