Can fault codes (DTCs) clear on their own? I had some, left them there, went back and they are gone?

Yes, there are "soft" and "hard" DTCs. A soft DTC will drop off after a certain number of cold start cycles if the error does not re-occur. Perfect example is the code that will be set if you don't tighten the gas cap securely. OBD-II will think there is a fuel system leak and set a code. Go through a couple of cold cycles with the cap secured correctly and the code will go away.<p>donp - '00 S4 Silver/Silver
