Check this dealer story out - Gray market cars? anyone hear of this?
So i brought my car into the dealer last thursday (7 days ago) to install an AM radio amplifier. They tell me that the oil leak i also happened to mention was the cam shaft tensioner seal, so they need to keep the car for a couple days to fix that, the head gasket, and the rar diff driveshaft seal. ok, whatever.
so 7 days later, i still don't have my car back. not because of the major repairs (btw, i had 49961 miles on it when i brough it in...PHEW!), but because of the damn radio amp. The guy ordered the wrong part not once, but twice!
so my service rep tells me that my car is what they call "Gray market". It was originally dstined for Europe or Canada, but ended up in the US (bought in FL, live in CA now).
Anyone ever heard of anything like this? what are the diferences? better parts? It passed CA emmission, so its not like its not federalized or anything.
shed some light.

"Gray market" is a term used (m)...
... to describe a car that went through changes to be able to be sold in its unintended market. Most cars built now are continent-specific, so there's no real differences between a Canadian car & a US car. Typically, "gray market" was a term used to describe a Euro-spec car that was modded to US Fed specs... such as a '80-'87 911 Turbo. AFAIK, there were none such cars for the US market, so if you see one for sale, it was Fed'd - a "gray market" car.
I wouldn't worry. My buddy bought his M5 in Buffalo, NY - it was originally delivered to a Canadian dealer as new. The only sign of its origin is the window sticker.

Look for Canada Transport sticker on the door frame. Not a big deal at all. (more)
I bought my Pathfinder in Canada 3-1/2 years ago when the US dollar was strong. Saved thousands. I then showed about 60 others how to do it. Every car sold in Canada since 1997 with the eqivalent model in the US will meet US safety and emissions requirements.
