help...new tires...s4 roars...scared
Hi all.
So I blamed my near bald tires for the awfull road noise...ALAS...brand new avon 550's to no avail.
shuddering at1-2mph.
rears same under full power or coasting
roars a little less on offramps
harmonic convergence at 81MPH...no roar
tires seem not to be wearing oddly up front
HELP??

Definitely your wheel bearings - went throught this exact thing last year; was certain roar was from
old tires, got new ones and noise went away for 2 days and came back w/ vengeance. Turned out to be rear wheel bearing. Wouldn't think those could make that much noise!

If it is bearings the sound gets louder w speed. sound may increase or decrease in intesity while
turning left or right depending on which bearing (inner or outer) is involved.

Try swerving back and forth when the noise is load and apply the brakes lightly as well...
Let us know if it gets louder or quieter when going left or right and when braking or not.

Sounds like the right front wheel bearing is toasty. You should lift the right...
side of the car up and if you have a mechanics stethoscope, use that to listen to the steering knuckle to check for grinding noises with the wheel moving. If you don't have one, just spin the front and rear wheels and see if you can distinguish which one is making the grinding noise. Also, the advice to grab each wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock position and check for play is good advice. If the bearing is so far gone that it's loose, you will notice.
