How bad is it to refuel with the car running? Fuel gague is now on the fritz !!
Hello All!!
My girlfriend filled my tank and did it with the car running. And now my fuel gague goes crazy when I have less than a half tank left.
Could leaving the car running while fueling be this bad?
I haven't searched... but does the S4 have the same fuel sensor as in the A6?
Thanks

Maybe it confused the system? I hope she wasn't smoking too!

I dunno where you live, but you're supposed to shut the car off when refueling...
unelss you enjoy the dangers of explosions...
I leave the car "on" (not running) all the time if I have company (leave the radio on) and they can watch teh gas gauge go up if they are that bored.... never had any problems..

The fuel tank is pressurized when the car is running. You should NEVER fill when running.
When I got my A6, I had it filled while the car was running. Started with half a tank. Gas attendee pumped over $60.00 into it. The pump recovery system took some of it but it made a mess and the car didn't run well for a couple of hours. Another friend with an A6 Avant had a leaky gas cap that caused the engine light to go on. The dealer could not determine the problem. He ended up getting a new car because of this. One year later we all got something in the mail from Audi explaining the tank pressure system and the importance of making sure the gas cap is on tightly so that the tank is pressurized. Hope this helps.

I noticed the same thing
I took a 600 mile trip and after a fuel-up, my "emission warning" light came on. The car ran fine otherwise, and at my next fill-up, I noticed the cap was not on tight. The light went out about 100 miles later.<p><a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=5323">'00 Imola/Onyx,6spd,conv.pkg,bose</a>

It an OBD-II diagnostic
After my gas tank leak last week, I know about this. One test the car does is to pressurize the tank and test for leakdown. If you have a VAG or VWtool, you can trigger and monitor this test by going to data block 71, and entering basic settings.
