Wow. From the size of these things, they weren't even worth bragging about in the sales brochure; if they saved much more than 1/2 pound or so over steel, I'd be surprised...

Default I thought you were an engineer? Knowing the size of the uprights and the difference between

the density of aluminum vs. iron (and naturally allowing for slight differences based upon the exact composition of the alloys), the difference is probably probably several hundred percent more than you think (probably a few pounds).

You should be able to reach past the wheel with a magnet. If it sticks, you've got steel.

Default I just replaced a set of lower control arms this week on a 97 A4 this week. It's more like 10 pounds

The new ones were steel, and they were much heavier. And that's just the bottom. My S4 has aluminum upper and lower control arms, and an aluminum spindle as well. If all that were steel, I'm guessing an easy 60 lbs extra, maybe more.

Quick Reply: I finally decided to look, and it turns out that I've got aluminum uprights.
