Instrument Cluster Display further investigated, not as easy as bad solder joint... w/ pics.

Actually, I never looked at it but I know another EE type did and found it hopeless
I tend to agree that it's not a simple (or possible) fix based on what I've seen/heard of the problem

Mine has been failing the exact same way for 40K miles now...
It started right before I went out of warranty as an intermittent fluctuation in brightness in the upper left part of the screen. Now the entire upper left quadrant is useless, so most of the time I just leave the display off.
But on occasion I'll turn it on and on cool slightly humid nights the display looks completely fine! Of course once the display warms up a little it all goes to crap again.

Ahh I wish I could try to fix mine but Audi is replacing it.....
For such a simple problem and a simple solution, I would think someone around here would at least give it a shot. I would be happy to try to fix one if someone wants to send me an old one. I'll see if Audi will give me the old cluster back. If so I will try to fix it and post the results.

Re: Guaranteed permanent Hero status to you if you can do it.
I'm taking mine out and putting a boost gauge in there...screw the display, I hate knowing how much gas I'm wasting!
