i've really never understood the whole "order it before you drive it" thing...
now peeps are talking about being on this list for the new S4.
what if you absoloutely hate the thing when it finally arrives?
why is there this need to have it before everyone else?
and why would you wait 6 months to a year or more for a car?

the 996 forum is chock full of guys who were on the list for M3s...
and who either hated it when it showed up or simply got sick of waiting. There are as many as a dozen guys on CFGs board who went through this.
Not only that but the first ones off the line are historically the worst ones with the most problems.
And they pay the highest premiums typically.
First on the block syndrome?

I ordered my S4 the day after my dealer got an order sheet...
...and I had never driven one, but I was already driving an A4. I pretty much knew everything I liked performancewise about my A4 would just be made better in the S4, and that the compromise would just be extra weight. I was fine with that.

Guilty. I did that with my TT. Built to order and waited 8 months. Funny thing is, I didn't have
to buy it since there were many waiting in line that would buy mine if I changed my mind.

Ordered my car before driving it..
Granted it'd been out for a bit when I ordered it, but at the time, nobody had one on the lot that was available to test drive. I put down a deposit, but it was refundable, so if after test driving it once it arrived, I didn't like it, I'd get my money back. Waited about 6 months between ordering and delivery.

You're saving a spot on a waiting list
So waiting... well really it's only a $1000 refundable deposit to hold a spot. So you're not really "waiting" for a car as you need to just plan for it. You'll be waiting longer if you don't get on a waiting list, because it's a queueing system.
If demand is high, you can still get one early but you need to pay a markup (a la the M3).
If the car sucks, hope others tell you this before you get yours, and just cancel and get your deposit back. All you're out is the opportunity cost of the money -- in this day and age maybe 0% interest is safer than a negative number ;-)

Hmmm. I put a deposit down a year and a half before the first 2000 S4's came in
My VW was aging, and I wanted a replacement. Knowing it was going to be a "rare" car, I put my name in.
