Default Just trying to learn a little about the S4

I was recently looking on the Stratmosphere website. I was looking atthe O.CT tuning and have to say I am a little less than impressed. I think the hp curve is nice, but the torque curve peaks and then drops rapidly (stage 3). I understand that torque is good at lower RPMs and that HP is good at higher rpms, but my vette has high hp curve and a torque curve that pretty flat through the entire rpmrange almost. Is this normal of turbo charged cars? Thanks, just asking questions

Default Yes...

...if you have a turbo car that makes a real flat torque curve through higher RPM's, it probably could be chip tuned to produce even more torque at lower or midrange RPM's, and then the curve would look more like what you've just seen. Moral of the story is turbos make torque and torque makes fun. Why artifically make low end torque lower to make the curve look better? That said, the stock S4 has two tiny turbos and they do run out of breath when pushed to the limit at high RPMs, but they have very little lag.

Default Yeah, low end torque is all we need :-)

I don't run up to 160 much, but I do drive around town alot, so it's all good. A buddy of mine with a 600hp camaro keeps trying to buy one of my S4s cause he loves the low end torque kick, it's just that cool. I say ride in a chipped S4 and you'll know what I mean

Default Well, once the low end torque gets you moving, you need HP to keep you moving...

...but the K03's are great up to about 70mph.

Default HP is just computed based on Torque at a certain RPM.

in fact, HP = Torque * RPM / 5252

(assuming Torque in ft-lbs)

So, if you have lots of torque down low, you will have more HP down low. Likewise, if you have more torque in the higher RPMs, you will have more HP in the higer RPMs (and the effect is more dramatic, too).

More torque down low gives a better "fun factor", too... the butt-dyno will be more impressed ;-)

What is key, is to look at the 'area under the curve' - that is, the HP curve (or torque curve) - and try to maximize that. Two cars might have the same peak HP, but if one has a nice and flat HP curve, and the other is simply a spike, take a guess which will be faster ;-)

Default They really should start publishing "area under hp/tq curve" numbers

but i guess given different redlines it would be tough to get parity.

Won't work. I want area under the curve for the entire usable torque range.

cool, thanks guys. I was just looking into a used S4 and wanted somthing that would run as fast as the vette it is going to replace.
