did any of you have the shop balance adn blueprint the engine while it was out? Seems like it would make sense for all the money you're spending and the stress you are adding. Then again a lot fo little extras that add up to big $$$ fast make sense. Just curious because I know of only one A4 guy who has had this done and I can think of only one S4 that I know who has.

I hardly think you are adding that much more stress to the engine..
And that the benefit of balancing and blueprinting would be so small that it would be pointless.

I think adding so much air that the stock MAF is maxed out is adding stress
how mcuh extra strss I don't know. From what I was reading in the performance forum, there is plenty of room to bring the tolerances down on a lot of the engine parts. How much power that adds I don't know. When it comes down to it, hp/$$$ is never a good trade off. It was just a though becuase it seems to many people with performance engines have this done.

I was thinking about this yesterday, after reading Jyoteen's post on the RS4...
He very clearly noticed a difference in smoothness with the RS4 engine. Seems even in stock form, maybe our engines could benefit from this. Unfortunately, I have NO idea what's involved with something like this. Care to enlighten us?

I don't know much about it either...it came to me form reading about
a guy in the performance forum who had it done to the 1.8...adn John Bass (who knows more than I'll even know) had a few points as well saying
"Balancing does a lot for a motor....

The rods for my motor were off as much as 4 grams on the big end, and 3 grams on the small end. Now they're all within 0.1 gram
The guys said the crank was pretty close, most machine shops balance the crank to a higher tolerance than manufacturer.
The JE pistons were good to go right out of the box (not sure about the stock ones though)
When things are spinning 7000 RPM, a gram or two can make a big difference.
A vibration could cause excess load on the bearings, possibly increasing friction.
Is it worth any HP? Maybe in the higher RPMs, although it might feel faster since it's smoother.
John Baas"
So i figured it might be worth it while you have your engine out for a K04 swap anyway.

To balance and blueprint, you have to rip apart the block and match the components. (m)
IMO, if you're going down this road, it also pays to put reinforced pistons and conrods and knife edge the cranks, as well. B&Bing a motor is money, so might as well go all out, right?

Not really
The MAF is simply a properly spec'd unit given a stock engine. Why would Audi use a MAF that can read the flow required for a 500HP motor when they're only building one for ~250HP?
