Default my buddy's wife had one break on her jetta while doing 80 on the turnpike - flipped several times

down an embankment. only place id be driving is to get a replacement tierod

How would one know if the tie rod is going foul?

Default lift car up, if you can move wheel in and out, examine tie rods while doing so. initial symptoms....

clunking when going over bumps.... yeah could be a lot of things but it would be on the differential.
