Drove around 50 miles, came home to check oil. Imagine my chagrin when I pop the hood, and see oil sprayed everywhere.

Spent an hour cleaning the engine compartment, oil didn't seem to be dangerously low.

However, the heat shield absorbed a fair amount of oil. Should I look at replacing it?

I think you're OK but it will probably smell pretty bad for the next few hundred miles...

Odd, didn't think car would start with oil cap off? My 1988 80q won't.

I was too, but the car ran completely normal. Nothing to indicate oil system not closed.

Had a 1976 Saab 99GL that I had not put the oil cap back on. It ran, but it was all it could do to keep running at a stop light.

Saw the cap when I looked under the hood put it back on and things were much better...
