Everyone is going to have their own opinion
But I love my nikon Coolpix 950... The quality is awesome. The one problem, however, is that it is notorious for bad red-eye. I have an external flash bracket that I use, so the quality is awesome.

No offense, but as a professional photographer, who uses digital cameras...
that cost $6K per, and having been digital through two olympics and a World Cup, I feel comfortable saying, that SONY IS NOT THE WAY TO GO!
Stick with canon or nikon only, in your price range. Nikon is slightly ahead of canon in their digital technology, but I mean slightly. Stick with compact flash, glass optics, and the highest megapixel count you can afford. I would not go below 3.1 megapixels.
Contact jodi at Roberts distributors and tell him Mike from Sideline Sports sent you. He will beat any price, period, and Roberts supplies Sports Ilustrated, Time, Newsweek, and many more. Tell jodi what you are looking for and he'll recomend what's best for you.
But sony, olympus, pentax, fuji, kodak and many others, are second tier to canon and nikon.

I'm going with a Nikon D100 ...
... I'm using a 5-megapixel Nikon Coolpix 5000 right now, but I miss my SLR. I used to take pictures for the New York Post when I lived in NYC, but for the time being photography is a serious hobby.
Anyway, Mike is right, stick with Canon or Nikon. Sonys are way overrated ... plus they use that crappy Memory Stick instead of a CompactFlash card which has more capacity.
