Poll: How many of you BS about "other buyers being interested" when selling a car?
Looking at a Dinan E36 locally - really want the car, guy is asking 17K with a lot of nice mods (Dinan Stage 3 suspension, every Dinan engine mod except cams and S/C, etc.) - 93K miles. I spoke with him last night and we setup an appointment tomorrow to see the car - coincidentally today he said he has another buyer coming Friday or Saturaday (which kills my negotiating power beyond a certain point). I was gonna shoot for 15k.
So, how many if you have made up stuff like that? I'm thinking of calling his bluff if he won't go down to my price - worst case I lose the car and have to drive the Exploder for another week or two .

Decided I didn't want a lease, being locked into financing is a bad idea at this point
And in something cheaper or more reliable I think I'd be very unhappy - going for drives is one of the ways I wind down, keeps me productive. If I had a Civic or something along those lines, it would be a bad thing.
I think the e36 is a good compromise...

I never do...
only sold 2 cars in my life. First one I was asking 4x market value, and got it (Alfa 164S). Second one there actually *were* other offers, but I declined a down payment from one douchebag so I could sell to a lady buying it for her son as a surprise gift, but who needed an extra week or so to scrape the $ together. That was a duh for me. That was on the E30 I had for 6 months. Damn I miss that car.

Realize that the market for an M3 is larger than the market for an S4.
It's entirely possible he's getting a lot of interest in the M3. I would expect that. But still...I wouldn't be surprised if he had a lot of tire kickers as well. If you throw an offer on the table, and he knows you're ready to close the deal, he might concede just to be done with the whole process of "selling a used car". In short, I would offer what you're willing to pay, and don't worry about "other buyers". There are other cars too.
